Placement Information

Courses

Where possible, NTGPE recommends that training in the early management of trauma and advanced life support should be undertaken prior to commencing GP training terms. However, if a formal course has not been undertaken, this will not exclude a GP registrar from commencing GP terms but the GP registrar must complete an approved ALS course during their training. (Note: ACRRM registrars are required to complete two tier one emergency courses, registrars should review ACRRM’s Emergency Medicine requirements available at in the Fellowship Training Handbook.

The following courses are approved:

  • Early Management of Severe Trauma Course (EMST)
  • Advanced Paediatric Life Support Course (APLS): Advanced Life Support Group
  • Rural Emergency Skills Training (REST)
  • Advanced Life Skills Training (ALS)

There may be other courses that meet the requirement. If GP registrars are interested in undertaking a course that they believe meets the requirement, forward course details to the NTGPE GP Registrar Support Team for consideration.

NTGPE provides limited reimbursement to GP registrars successfully completing one of the above courses during their training. Registrars will need to show that the course meets the demonstrated skills required of ALS training and that participants will be individually assessed. GP registrars will need to provide evidence of this assessment when the course is completed. Reimbursement details are available from the GP Registrar Support Team.
