Accreditation
If you are considering becoming a GP Supervisor and applying for accreditation as a training practice, it is worthwhile to familiarise yourself and your practice manager with the training program as described under the pages Overview of GP Supervision, GP Supervision Terms and Mandatory Requirements. These pages detail GP Registrar training requirements. It is also important to be familiar with the National Minimum Terms and Conditions for Registrars.
To be eligible to host GP Registrars or Prevocational Doctors your Practice or Clinic and GP Supervisors must first be accredited with the appropriate training body. Accreditation can be obtained through either the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners or the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine by completing the appropriate application paperwork.
Guideline for minimum experience required for a NTGPE Supervisor Accreditation for RACGP
- RACGP Level 1: 4 years full time GP experience including 2 years post completion of training
- RACGP Level 2: 3 years full time GP experience including 1 year post completion of training
You can obtain this paperwork by emailing [email protected] or contacting NTGPE directly.
All completed paperwork must be sent back to NTGPE with all supporting documentation including the application form, copies of the supervisor’s curriculum vitae, CPD listing and NT Medical registration. Once this has been received and endorsed by NTGPE it will be forwarded to the appropriate body for approval.
This process can take up to three months and GPRs and Prevocational Doctors cannot be placed with a practice until it has been accredited. Without this, accredited GP Registrar’s time will not be able to be counted towards their training time.
Usually, once the Supervisor Application has been before the Accreditation Committee a site visit will be arranged. Following this a recommendation will be made by NTGPE to the relevant colleges, once approval is received from the colleges a certificate will be sent to the Supervisor and Practice.
Re-accreditation paperwork must then be completed every three years for GP Supervisors and Practices to maintain their accreditation status.
Each new Supervisor in a practice will be required to complete the necessary documentation to gain accreditation.
All Supervisors are encouraged to attend the GP Supervisors workshops that are held annually in either Alice Springs or Darwin.
