The Northern Territory is a vast landmass covering 1,346,000 square kilometres, which represents 17% of the Australian continent or is twice as big as New South Wales and Victoria put together. It is dominated by extreme landscapes from the deserts and rugged mountain ranges of Central Australia to the eroded sandstone hills and gorges of the Top End. Considerable distances and long travel times are normal in the Northern Territory and often locations may become cut off due to extreme weather conditions.
To help program participants prepare for a placement, NTGPE has prepared the information located in the sub-headings (Preparation Advice, Travel and Accommodation, Orientation, Supervision and Support). It is also recommended that program participants do some self-preparation by undertaking some research online or reading some of the many books that have been written about the Northern Territory.
